Chainsaw recall notice: STIHL MSA 300 battery chain saw

What the CPSC, Health Canada and the UK product safety list say about the 2023 STIHL MSA 300 recall: the fault, the serial numbers, the numbers sold and the remedy.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page sets out what three official records say about one recall: the STIHL MSA 300 battery chain saw, recalled in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in autumn 2023. It also reports the maker's own US notice. The wider list of saw recalls is in the guide to chainsaw recalls and safety notices. Each record is quoted in our own words, and the notices linked below are the record.

The fault as the notices describe it

All three records describe the same fault: the braking system of the MSA 300 can take longer to brake than expected. The US and Canadian notices call it a laceration hazard. The UK notice, issued by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and notified by the Health and Safety Executive, says the maker found anomalies in the chain brake area during internal testing, and that the reliability of the chain braking time was in question. It adds that in the event of kickback there may be an increased risk of injury to the user. The risk level on the UK notice is "Medium".

Which saws

The US and Canadian notices say serial numbers lower than 447457319 are included. The serial number is on a label on the rear hand guard. The saw is gray and orange, with "STIHL" and "MSA 300" on its side. The maker's US notice names the product as the MSA 300 C-O. The UK notice lists the model as MSA300 and gives the serial number 447457319.

Remedy

The US, Canadian and maker notices give one remedy: stop using the saw and take it to an authorized servicing dealer for a free replacement of the brake drum and brake band. The CPSC record lists the remedy type as repair. The UK notice records the corrective action as a recall of the product from end users.

The two US sources disagree on the start of the sale period, and the US and Canadian notices disagree with each other on the place of origin, so both versions are shown. The Canadian notice names the manufacturer as Andreas STIHL AG & Co. KG of Waiblingen, Germany. The US maker notice names the importer as STIHL Incorporated of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Where the notices send readers

The Canadian notice gives the maker's Canadian telephone line and notes that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits redistributing, selling or giving away recalled products. The UK notice points to a recall page on the maker's UK site; that address returned "not found" on October 8, 2026 and is not linked here. For the maker's own US page, see the STIHL USA recall notice for the MSA 300. The CPSC notice for this recall is number 23282 in the register linked on the parent page.
