Training records: the fields OSHA and WorkSafeBC name, and where nothing is named

The fields that OSHA lists for a training certification record in logging and lockout work, what WorkSafeBC says about faller training records and what SafeWork NSW and HSE say, with the places that name no fields marked as such.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page reports what the named codes, regulators and makers say. It is not training and does not teach the work. This page reports what the official source says. It is not legal advice: ask the office named here. It lists the fields that regulators name for a record of worker training in tree and forestry work. The United States logging standard has the fullest field list, so the first table follows it. The other regulators are set beside it, and where a regulator names no fields the table says so. It is not a template, and a record with these fields is not claimed to meet any rule. All pages were read on October 9, 2026. The courses themselves are covered in the guides on chainsaw tickets and certifications by country.

United States: the OSHA standards that name fields

Three OSHA standards in 29 CFR 1910 name what a training record holds. The logging standard, 1910.266, asks the employer to verify its training with a written certification record in paragraph (i)(10). The lockout standard, 1910.147, and the electric power standard, 1910.269, ask for a certification that energy control training was done and is kept up to date. The guide to OSHA standards for tree work sets out which of these OSHA ties to tree care.

Paragraph (a)(2) of 1910.269 requires employees to demonstrate proficiency before training counts as complete. The standard's own note says employment records showing successful completion are one way of tracking that, though the paragraph does not require them.

British Columbia, Canada: faller training and supervision

Section 26.22 of the WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, Part 26 says a worker may not work as a faller in a forestry operation without falling training acceptable to the Board and written certification as a competent faller. It sets a minimum of 30 days of one-on-one basic training, a written or oral examination, and a supervised trainee period of 180 days or a shorter period the supervisor judges enough. The person supervising evaluates the trainee weekly, keeps records of every evaluation, and verifies in writing that the trainee showed the competence needed. A person acceptable to the Board may certify in writing that the worker is a competent faller. A record of the training is kept in a form and manner acceptable to the Board, and a copy is made available to an officer or to the trainee. The section lists no individual fields.

New South Wales, Australia: chipper training

The SafeWork NSW Woodchipper guide says training and instruction should be recorded, along with any refresher training, and that policies, procedures, training, instruction and site evaluations are documented before work begins. It lists the subjects the training covers: the hazards of the machine, safety features, starting, feeding and shutting down, clearing blockages, emergencies, maintenance, transport, PPE, and testing of the bump bar, control device, interlocks and presence-sensing systems with results recorded. It gives no fields for the record. The guide to the woodchipper guide sets out all its chapters. SafeWork NSW text is licensed CC BY 4.0.

Great Britain

The HSE page on training and certification in tree work says employers must provide health and safety training in working hours and without charge to the worker, at induction, when risks are new or increased, as refresher training, and when a supervisor finds a weakness. It names no training record or fields. HSE text is available under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
