Preparing for an ISA exam: the kinds of study material and classes that exist
What ISA itself offers for study, what chapters, university extension offices and community colleges list for prep classes, and what ISA says about the line between a prep class and the exam.
Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.
This page describes what the publishers of each option say about it. It does not rank anything, does not say which is worth paying for, and holds no exam questions. ISA's own pages say exam content is confidential, so none is reproduced here. The guide on choosing a course covers how to judge a training provider. The guide on how ISA exams are delivered covers sittings, fees and retakes.
The line between study and the exam
ISA's Types of Credentials page says a certification is learned through self-study and experience, and that its assessment is independent of any specific class, course or training program. It lists, as key elements of a certification, that trainers cannot assess their own trainees and that exam questions are never released to anyone teaching preparatory courses or building preparatory material. A qualification such as TRAQ works the other way: the page says it pairs a class with an assessment, and trainers may know the questions. So a prep class for the Certified Arborist exam is not part of the exam, and a class being listed here is not an ISA endorsement of it. On the Certified Arborist page ISA writes that candidates may use any materials they choose.
Study material from ISA
- Exam outline. ISA publishes a Certified Arborist exam outline as a PDF. It lists the ten domains with their weights, from Tree Biology at 11 percent to Safe Work Practices at 15 percent, and the tasks, knowledge and skills under each. The program guide gives the same ten percentages.
- Recommended study resources. The ISA page for the Certified Arborist says it keeps a full list of recommended study resources, with handbooks in the ISA webstore, and encourages materials grounded in best practices and scientific theory.
- Online Learning Center. The same page describes a 25-course package, the Introduction to Arboriculture Training Series, as able to help prepare for the Certified Arborist exam. ISA lists self-paced lessons, more than 750 quiz questions for exam practice, a glossary and read-aloud text. ISA says the resources named on its site should not be the only source used.
- Practice exams. ISA's Online Courses page says the Online Learning Center has five Online Arborists' Certification Practice Exams. ISA's Common Questions page, in a separate answer, says there are no practice exams available and points to the exam outlines and the store. The two ISA pages differ, and this page reports both.
- Online quizzes. ISA's Online Quizzes page describes article and book quizzes that can help with study or with CEUs. Credential holders who score 80 percent or better get CEUs posted within 48 hours, the page says.
- Access period. ISA says online courses and practice exams stay on a buyer's Learning Center for three years from purchase, and each can be completed once for CEUs in that time.
Chapter workshops
Chapters and councils run short workshops, often in front of a paper sitting. The Arkansas Urban Forestry Council's page for a 2026 workshop says it covers some of the exam topics considered most difficult: safe work practices, tree biology, tree identification, soil science and management, pruning, diagnosis and plant disorders, and tree risk assessment. It lists a registration fee of US$45, a workshop date of July 31, 2026 and a workshop deadline of July 24, 2026. The same page says registering for the exam that follows is optional, and that ISA exam registration, fee and deadline are separate from the workshop, with an exam registration deadline of July 9, 2026.
University extension courses
A University of Tennessee extension flyer for Knox County lists a two-day arborist prep course for green industry professionals, June 8 to 10, 2026 at the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum: two classroom days and a morning in the field. It covers all sixteen chapters of the 4th edition of the ISA Arborists' Certification Study Guide. The cost is US$149.00 and includes a copy of that guide, with a registration deadline of May 31, 2026. The flyer says the course is not intended for the general public and that experience or education in arboriculture is required.
Community college courses
| Provider | Course as the college lists it | Cost and credit as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Amarillo College, Texas | Arborist Pre-Certification, described as preparing professional arborists to take the ISA Certified Arborist examination. ISA CEUs are listed as available. | US$449.00. The college lists financial aid for workforce continuing education classes of 24 hours and longer. |
| Portland Community College, Oregon | CEU 4030, ISA Arborist Exam Preparation: an overview of the exam content and preparation strategies. One stated outcome is scoring 80 percent or higher on chapter-specific practice exams during the course. | 0.3 to 1.5 credit hours. No price on the course guide. |
Neither college page says the course is required for the exam or that ISA recognizes it as an eligibility route. ISA's Certified Arborist program guide has its own education routes to eligibility: assessment-based certificate programs of 900 or 1,800 hours with a minimum of arboriculture-focused hours, and associate or bachelor degrees with listed courses. Those are described in the guide on ISA credentials.
What is not covered here
Books from outside publishers, video channels, podcasts and study groups are not listed because no publisher page for them was read for this guide. ArboNation does not host or answer exam questions.
