Public urban forestry grant programmes: what eight funders say, with their own dates
A table of public grant programmes for urban trees from the US Forest Service, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York State, Pennsylvania, England, Canada and New South Wales, as each funder describes them. Amounts, eligibility and dates are the funder's, copied as printed.
Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.
This page reports what each funder says on its own pages, read on October 9, 2026. It is not a list of open grants and it is not advice on applying. Programmes close, change terms and reopen, so each row carries the date or status the funder printed and the page to check. Only programmes whose funder pages could be opened are in the table. Several pages for Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and the Michigan, Victoria and New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries pages, did not load, so their absence says nothing about whether a programme exists.
The programmes
| Programme and funder | What the funder says, with its dates |
|---|---|
| National Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Cost Share, US Forest Service | The Forest Service page says the programme is traditionally funded with an approximate US$1 million per year challenge cost share grant, inside an urban forestry programme funded at US$36 to 40 million annually. Its grant notice is headed with a deadline of October 12, 2026 and is applied for through Grants.gov. The notice says the year's focus is community tree resource utilization, meaning wood from pruning, removals, storms and pest outbreaks turned into products such as lumber, slabs, flooring or biochar. It says competitive proposals show industry recognized safety and tree care standards. |
| Urban Forestry Grants, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources | Open to cities, villages, towns, counties, tribes and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in or conducting projects in Wisconsin. Four categories. Regular grants range from US$1,000 to US$25,000 with a 50-50 match; the page says applications must be sent or postmarked by 11:59 p.m. on October 1, and prints no year. The 2027 application guide PDF gives the deadline as October 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m., by email, which falls before the October 9, 2026 read date. The guide gives July 1, 2026 as the date the application period opens, November 2026 for funding notification, January 2027 as the start of the grant period and December 31, 2027 as its end. Startup grants range from US$1,000 to US$5,000, with 50 percent reimbursement of eligible costs per the application guide and applications accepted July 1 through October 1 per the grants page, for communities starting or restarting a programme. Catastrophic storm grants range from US$4,000 to US$50,000 with no match, after a governor-declared state of emergency, and applications must be postmarked within 60 days of the declaration. Inflation Reduction Act grants are competitive no-match grants of up to US$500,000 for disadvantaged communities, and the page says US$4 million has been awarded. |
| Urban and Community Forestry grants, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation | The DEC page lists Community Reforestation (CoRe) Round 2 as open: US$20 million for municipalities, nonprofits, soil and water conservation districts, Indian Tribes and Nations, and State agencies, for tree planting that expands and restores forested natural areas serving urban populations. The deadline printed is 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. It says the grant is funded by the Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act of 2022. The page lists Round 17 of the Urban and Community Forestry programme, for tree inventories and management plans, as Closed: applications were due August 12, 2026, US$10 million was available with US$3 million set aside for communities of 65,000 people or fewer, and awards ran from US$50,000 to US$2.5 million. It lists CoRe Round 1 as Closed and says US$15 million was announced on Arbor Day 2025 for sixteen projects. |
| 2026 Protect Community Forests for Community Resiliency Grant, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources | US$1.7 million for work to reduce the impact of emerald ash borer, funded by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. The maximum request is US$150,000 and no match is required. Eligible applicants include 501(c) nonprofits, schools, local units of government and Tribal governments in Minnesota. The page prints application available August 3, 2026, questions due August 31, 2026, applications due September 14, 2026, review from September 15 to November 12, 2026, and grant notifications on November 13, 2026. The DNR grants page lists earlier rounds under past grants, among them ReLeaf Community Forestry Grants and Shade Tree Bonding Grants for 2023 to 2027. |
| Urban Tree Challenge Fund, Forestry Commission, England | The GOV.UK page is headed Withdrawn and says the fund is closed to new applications. It describes the fund as paying 80 percent of published standard costs for planting and establishing standard trees in urban and peri-urban areas, with a minimum application value of GBP 10,000, match funding for the rest, and a scoring threshold of 100 points. Planting could be scheduled over the 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026 planting years, with most (80 percent) in the first. |
| 2 Billion Trees, Natural Resources Canada | The page lists the funding stream as Closed and says the programme is no longer accepting applications. It says the government will wind the programme down, as announced in the Federal Fall Budget of 2025. The page shows a modified date of 2026-03-16. |
| Greener Neighbourhoods Grant 2026, NSW Planning, Land Use, Housing and Strategy | For councils in Greater Sydney (33 councils) and the Hunter-Central Coast and Illawarra-Shoalhaven regions (10 councils). Up to AU$60,000 excluding GST per council, one application each. The page prints that applications opened July 24, 2026, closed August 21, 2026 at 5:00 pm, and that the status is Closed. It lists uses such as strategic plans with canopy or heat targets, canopy and heat data, tree asset databases or management plans, and community education. Projects must be complete within 24 months of the funding deed or by November 30, 2028. |
| Community Conservation Partnerships Program grants, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources | The grants page lists Community and Watershed Forestry as a category and says its projects fund riparian buffers, lawn-to-meadow conversions and community trees. It says eligible organizations vary by project type but generally include county and municipal governments, municipal agencies, 501(c)3 non-profit organizations and, with limited options, for-profit businesses. It says that for most grants the department accepts applications once annually, with the application period opening the second Monday of January and closing the last business day of April, and that some grants have their own periods. The page says the programme awards approximately US$50 million for projects each year, with typical awards ranging from US$50,000 to US$500,000. It prints no match figure. |
What the pages share
- Three of the eight print a closed status: the English fund, the Canadian stream and the NSW 2026 round. Four print a deadline: October 12, 2026 for the Forest Service notice, November 4, 2026 for the New York CoRe round, and September 14 and October 1, 2026 for Minnesota and Wisconsin, both before the read date.
- Match terms differ. The Wisconsin catastrophic storm and Inflation Reduction Act grants and the Minnesota grant have no match. Wisconsin regular and startup grants need a 50-50 match. The English fund paid 80 percent of standard costs and left the rest to match funding.
- The Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and NSW pages name public bodies as applicants: cities, villages, towns, counties, tribes, municipal governments and councils.
Limits
- The Wisconsin web page prints its deadline without a year. The year here comes from the 2027 application guide.
- Dollar amounts are as printed. The Forest Service and Wisconsin pages use dollars, and the NSW page prints dollars excluding GST.
- The programmes are examples of what public funders publish. They are not a ranking and they leave out most state, provincial and local programmes, and no New Zealand, Victorian or Queensland programme is in the table because those funder pages did not load.
