How the answer is worked out
Crew cost = crew hours times the cost of one crew hour. Equipment cost = hours times the cost of one hour, for each equipment row, added together.
Job total = crew cost plus equipment cost plus disposal costs plus other costs. A row with hours needs its rate, and the other way round.
What the sources say
University of Missouri Extension's break-even publication works labor cost per unit by multiplying hours by the applicable hourly wage rate. For equipment it describes an hourly cost that is the sum of hourly depreciation, repair and operating costs, multiplied by the hours the equipment runs.
On the same topic, BDC's pricing steps say direct costs include direct labour costs of providing a service, and that cost of sales can include labour, equipment and facility costs. BDC's gross margin entry calls gross margin the share of revenue left after direct costs such as labour and raw materials.
The total adds only what is typed. No overhead, markup or margin is added. The margin and markup page takes a cost and shows the price for a margin or a markup that is typed there.
The page holds no hourly cost, equipment rate or disposal figure. Every box starts empty.
Arithmetic only. The answer is only as good as the numbers entered. It is not a plan or a safe working load for any job.
