City tree data in Austin: the public tree inventory

What Austin's open data portal publishes as its tree inventory: a compilation of 62,274 point rows as of March 13, 2020, the sources it was compiled from, the three attribute fields, the as-needed update and the public domain licence field.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, field list, row counts and licence field as read on October 8, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The City's rules for regulated trees are on the Austin tree rules page.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Tree Inventory and sits on the City of Austin's City Data Hub, in the Environment category. Its description says it shows point locations of public trees inventoried by the City of Austin as of March 13, 2020, compiled from several City sources: the Development Services Department's Tree Division, the school district, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Department's 2013 downtown tree inventory. The description adds that it is a compilation, not a complete and comprehensive inventory of all trees, and that some errors or duplicate data may exist. The record names the Urban Forest Program, under the Austin Climate Action and Resilience department, as the owner, and gives the time range of the data as January 1, 2013 to March 13, 2020.

Rows, update and fields

The portal's record query returned a count of 62,274 rows on October 8, 2026. The rows were last updated on March 13, 2020, the record gives the update frequency as As Needed, and the portal shows the view itself was last edited in April 2026. The dataset has only a few attribute fields: a geometry, species, diameter, latitude and longitude, and a georeferenced location column. The diameter field holds numbers from 0 to 111, and the record does not state the unit or the height at which diameter was taken.

The species field is free text, so the same species appears under more than one spelling. The portal's grouping query returned Southern Live Oak on 5,815 rows, Elm, Cedar on 4,830, Pecan on 4,252, Cedar Elm on 3,979, Oak, Live (Southern) on 3,946 and Crapemyrtle on 2,661. These are row counts in the portal, not a statement about how many trees stand in the city, and a species split across spellings counts separately.

Licence

The licence field reads Public Domain. The description links the City of Austin Open Data Terms of Use, which is a separate page on the portal. The attribution field reads City of Austin, Texas.
