City tree data in Belfast: the Belfast Trees dataset on Open Data NI
What Belfast City Council lists about its public trees on Open Data NI: the Belfast Trees record created November 27, 2015, the 15,500 trees its showcase page describes, the Open Government Licence it names, and the fact that the listed CSV address returned a page not found on October 10, 2026.
Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 10, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.
This page describes a public dataset as its publisher lists it. It reports the record description, metadata and link checks as read on October 10, 2026, and it does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. For a city file that could be queried for counts, see the Ottawa Tree Inventory.
What the dataset is
The record is titled Belfast Trees on Open Data NI, the Northern Ireland open data portal, and is filed under the publisher Belfast City Council in the local government group. Its description says the data set contains information about the trees located on Belfast streets, including the location, species, age and dimensions. The topic categories are environment, health and planning or cadastre, the tags include park trees, street trees and trees, and the update frequency is given as annually. The portal shows a creation date of November 27, 2015. Its programming interface reports the record as last modified on August 24, 2020, and the data.gov.uk copy of the record shows August 29, 2020 as its updated date and November 27, 2015 as the update date of the one CSV link.
The showcase page
A showcase page on the same portal, titled The Public Trees of Belfast City, says the council's open data tree database details the species and location of 15,500 public trees in the cityscape, in parks and on streets. It says the data includes tree location, species, age, health and, when recorded, tree dimensions, and that it is available in open CSV format. It adds that members of the Geographical Information Science research and teaching unit at Queen's University Belfast analysed and mapped the records by dominant species, and that the map includes a heat map of tree density. The page is a description by the portal and the university team; it is not a count taken by this site.
The download link
The portal record lists one resource, Belfast Trees in CSV format, hosted on the council's own website under a file name that ends odTrees.csv. When that address was requested on October 10, 2026, the council's site returned a page not found with an HTTP 404 status. For that reason this page gives no field list and no counts. The record does not say whether the file moved. The portal lists a data contact at the council's Digital Services team.
Licence
The portal record and the data.gov.uk copy both name the UK Open Government Licence as the licence. The data.gov.uk site says its own content is available under the Open Government Licence version 3.0 except where stated otherwise; that statement is about the site, not about this dataset.
