City tree data in Calgary: the public trees dataset

What Calgary's open data portal publishes about trees on public land: the 581,909 records the portal counts on October 8, 2026, the tree, stump and shrub split, the weekly update, the heritage flag and the terms of use the record points to.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 8, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The City's rules for the same trees are on the Calgary tree rules page.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Public Trees and is published by The City of Calgary, with Parks and Open Spaces named as the business unit that supplies the data. Its description says it holds information about Calgary's urban forest, including the locations and types of trees on public land, and points to the City's Urban Forest Management map. The record lists the category as Environment and the tags tree, forest, park, deciduous and evergreen. The temporal start date field reads February 17, 1893, and the portal's earliest active date value is February 18, 1893.

Records, update and columns

The portal's record query returned a count of 581,909 on October 8, 2026. The metadata gives the update frequency as weekly, and the latest modified date value in the data was October 6, 2026. The records are not all trees. The portal's own grouping query returned 500,858 rows with the asset type TREE, 42,248 with STUMP and 38,803 with SHRUB.

The columns include an asset code, asset type and subtype, common name, horticultural code, genus, species, cultivar, diameter at breast height in centimetres, mature size, a rating, an appraised value, a tree condition rating as a percentage, a heritage trees flag, tree maintenance, who maintains it, a location detail, site element type, hardware, active and modified dates, a point, and the community the point falls in. The heritage trees flag read Y on 2,453 rows and N on 579,456. The maintained by column named Calgary Parks on 571,766 rows, and other values such as Calgary Recreation (2,738 rows) and Calgary Transit (554 rows) are also present. The most common genera by row count were spruce (Picea) with 116,990, poplar (Populus) with 100,164, ash (Fraxinus) with 82,720, elm (Ulmus) with 76,434 and the cherry and plum group (Prunus) with 40,098.

Licence

The record's licence field reads "See Terms of Use" and links the Open Calgary Terms of Use, a page on the same portal described as terms for accessing and using open data. The attribution field reads The City of Calgary. This page does not restate the terms: the record sends the reader to that page for the conditions of use.

The Calgary map the description names is a separate City service. The dataset record says only that readers can visit it to learn more, so this page reports nothing from the map itself.
