City tree data in Denver: the tree inventory on the Colorado portal

What the Colorado open data portal publishes as Denver's Parks and Recreation tree inventory: the 359,263 rows the portal counts on October 8, 2026, vacant sites among them, the public domain licence field and the metadata dates that disagree with the data.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, field list, row counts and licence field as read on October 8, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The City's permit rules for the same trees are on the Denver tree rules page.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Tree Inventory Denver and sits on data.colorado.gov, the state's open data portal, in the Natural Resources category. The attribution field reads City and county of Denver and the publisher field reads Business Intelligence Center of CO. The description says it is a point representation of trees managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation in the City and County of Denver, based on GPS locations, with diameter, species common and scientific names and coordinates. The record names Denver's own open data hub as the data source and links the hub page for the layer.

Rows, update and fields

The portal's record query returned a count of 359,263 on October 8, 2026. The record shows rows last updated on September 3, 2026. Its metadata is inconsistent: one field gives the expected update frequency as never, another gives monthly, the source schedule reads quarterly, the oldest record date reads May 8, 2009 and the newest reads July 20, 2018, and the total at initial publish reads 277,329. The portal's own query returned a latest inventory date of June 30, 2026 and an earliest value of September 7, 1604. This page reports all of them as shown.

The fields include a site ID, common and botanical species names, diameter, number of stems, condition, location name and code, site designation, inventory date, structural defects, disease and pest defects, an emerald ash borer tag, a risk tag, a target class, address, street, neighborhood, comments, coordinates, work group and a notable flag. The common name Vacant Site appears on 26,222 rows, so not every row is a tree. After that came honey locust with 23,780 rows, green ash with 23,244, littleleaf linden with 13,394 and silver maple with 11,630. By condition, 140,402 rows read Fair, 130,843 Good, 50,099 N/A, 22,697 Poor, 5,899 Very Poor, 5,788 Dead and 3,529 Excellent.

By site designation, 191,250 rows read Private Maintained Street Tr, 61,089 Park, 13,281 School, 13,161 Street Tree and 8,831 Median, and 38,497 rows were empty. The emerald ash borer tag field has a value on 29,997 rows. These are row counts in the portal, not a statement about how many trees stand in the city.

Licence

The licence field reads Public Domain. The record's contact is the state Business Intelligence Center, not a City office, and the record names the City's hub as the place the data comes from.
