City tree data in Edmonton: the Trees dataset

What Edmonton's open data portal publishes about trees on City land: the 481,205 records the portal counts on October 9, 2026, the location types, the monthly update stated in the record and the terms of use the record points to.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The City's rules for the same trees are on the Edmonton tree rules page.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Trees and is published by the City of Edmonton in the Environmental Services category. Its description calls it a map of boulevard and open space trees owned and maintained by the City, and adds that not all City-owned trees are captured. A custom field gives the purpose as a list of all trees owned and maintained by the City. Other custom fields say the data is internally sourced, a primary dataset, with a duplicates-removed field and an accuracy field both reading Yes. Among the record's tags are trees, neighbourhood and forestry, and its provenance field reads official.

Records, update and columns

The portal's record query returned a count of 481,205 on October 9, 2026. The record's update frequency field reads Monthly and its update method reads Automated. The portal's rows-updated timestamp was October 5, 2026. The planted date column ran from May 1, 1911 to September 25, 2026 among rows that carry a date; the column description says the date is given if known.

The columns include a tree identification number, neighbourhood name, location type, botanical name, common name with the cultivar where known, genus, species, cultivar, trunk diameter in centimetres measured at 1.2 metres from ground level, an estimated condition as a percentage, planted date, owner, a yes or no flag for trees that bear edible fruit, the type of fruit, latitude and longitude. Several more columns hold the ward and neighbourhood boundaries the point falls in.

The location type column groups the rows as follows, largest first: Park with 183,258, Boulevard with 163,426, Buffer with 40,654, Naturalized Park with 34,629, Monowalk with 23,038 and Centre Median with 10,476. The owner column reads Parks on all 481,205 rows. The edible fruit flag is true on 63,636 rows and false on 417,569. By row count the most common genera were elm (Ulmus) with 98,073, ash (Fraxinus) with 95,896, spruce (Picea) with 70,257, poplar (Populus) with 40,737, pine (Pinus) with 32,548 and apple and crabapple (Malus) with 25,718.

Licence

The record's licence field reads "See Terms of Use". The attribution field reads City of Edmonton and links the City's urban forestry page. The portal has a separate terms of use page, which loads by script and returned no readable text to this check, so this page does not restate the terms. The conditions of use are the ones on that portal page.
