City tree data in Mesa, Arizona: the Tree Inventory dataset

What Mesa's open data portal publishes about trees and other vegetation on City land: the 38,716 records the portal counts on October 9, 2026, the vegetation categories, the owning departments, the action column and the terms of use the record points to.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The diversity targets that cities set for street trees are on the street tree diversity guide.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Tree Inventory and is published by the City of Mesa's Data and Performance group in the Environmental and Sustainability category. Its description says it holds information about trees owned and maintained by the City, including those kept by Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) and the Transportation and Transit departments. It says the dataset also includes other vegetation in City parks, open basins and rights of way, such as cacti and bushes, and that City trees are managed by third parties. The row label is "tree or vegetation".

Records, update and columns

The portal's record query returned a count of 38,716 on October 9, 2026, and the portal's rows-updated timestamp was October 9, 2026. The description says PRCF data is updated twice a year, in the first week of January and July, and that Transportation and Transit data is updated as changes are made. A custom field gives the publishing frequency as weekly and the data change frequency as quarterly. The highest modified date among rows was October 6, 2026 and the lowest created date was January 1, 2008.

The columns include a facility identifier, a landscape area key, a location description, a vegetation category, common name, botanical name, trunk diameter at breast height in inches, vegetation height in 15 foot bands, an owner, an action, action date, created and modified dates, the street, an estimated replacement value of the tree, and coordinates. The action column is described as showing whether work was done, with values such as Construction, None, Remove, Repair and Replace.

The vegetation category column groups the rows as Tree with 36,601, Shrub with 1,047, Groundcover with 719, Accent with 250 and Cactus with 99. The owner column groups them as Parks with 22,269, COM Trans with 10,346, Facilities with 5,170 and COM Transit with 900, with 31 rows blank. The action column reads None on 11,006 rows, Construction on 83, Remove on 81, Replace on 51, Prune on 11 and Repair on 3, and is empty on 27,481. Among rows in the Tree category the common name column reads VACANT SITE on 3,421 rows, so the Tree count includes planting sites with no tree. The next most common names were Chinese elm with 1,778, Chilean mesquite with 1,302, orange with 1,157, Mexican fan palm with 963 and mulga with 931.

Licence

The record's licence field reads "See Terms of Use", and a custom field links a terms of use page on the City's data portal. That page loads by script and returned no readable text to this check, so this page does not restate the terms. The conditions of use are the ones on that portal page.
