City tree data in Montreal: Public trees on the City's territory (Arbres publics)

What the City of Montreal's open data portal publishes about public trees: the 335,519 records in the consolidated file on October 9, 2026, the borough coverage table, the data dictionary's field definitions and the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026; the portal text is in French and is restated here in English. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The diversity targets that cities set for street trees are on the street tree diversity guide.

What the dataset is

The record is titled Arbres publics sur le territoire de la Ville and is published by the Ville de Montreal. Its description says it holds data on trees belonging to the municipality, in the "public domain": street trees and off-street trees in parks and public squares. It warns that in many cases the City's data on where trees stand may be imprecise or out of date, and that in some boroughs park trees are not listed. The record was created on the portal on May 1, 2020 and its metadata was last modified on October 9, 2026. The record gives the update frequency as monthly.

Files and records

The record lists six files. The main one is the consolidated inventory of public trees, which the portal gives as a CSV of 135,682,606 bytes, last modified on October 9, 2026, with a title noting that boroughs are included only if they are in the corporate system. The portal's datastore returned 335,519 rows for it on October 9, 2026. A second consolidated file holds the history of trunk diameter readings (DHP), last modified on October 7, 2026. The others are a table of inventory status by borough, a PDF data dictionary, and two separate borough files for Montreal-Nord and Outremont.

Borough coverage

The status table has 19 rows, one per borough. It records whether street trees and off-street trees are georeferenced, the source system and the date of the last data delivery. Street trees are marked yes for 12 boroughs, among them Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, Le Sud-Ouest, Saint-Laurent and Lachine, and marked partly for Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Ville-Marie. Off-street trees are marked yes for 7 boroughs and partly, with wording of "very little", "little" or "a lot", for 7 more. Anjou, Montreal-Nord, Outremont, Verdun and L'Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève are marked no for both. Most rows name the City's GDV system as the source and show a twice-monthly update; Anjou, Outremont, Lachine and L'Île-Bizard show data not available, and Montreal-Nord shows December 6, 2016.

Columns and definitions

The consolidated table has 34 fields, the first being the portal's row number, and they include a borough number and name, street, side of street, civic number, location type, species code, Latin, French and English species names, trunk diameter, survey date, planting date, park code and name, a remarkable tree flag, sector, projected coordinates, longitude and latitude. The 2018 data dictionary defines the inventory type as H for off-street and R for street trees, the diameter as trunk diameter at breast height, equal to 1.4 metres above the highest ground level, and the survey date as the date of the last diameter reading. It says City inspectors in each borough collect and update the data, noting species, diameter and location, and that the series starts in 1989 and was first opened to the public in July 2012.
