City tree data in Philadelphia: the Parks and Recreation tree inventory

What Philadelphia's open data portal publishes about its tree inventory: the 151,726 rows in the 2025 file on October 8, 2026, the yearly files from 2021, the six fields in each row and the licence name the portal shows.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, field list, row counts and licence field as read on October 8, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The City's permit and ordinance pages for the same trees are on the Philadelphia tree rules page.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Philadelphia Tree Inventory on OpenDataPhilly, with the City of Philadelphia as publisher and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation as the source of the inventory. The portal describes it as a comprehensive inventory of all trees within the limits of the City of Philadelphia, and says the dataset is a snapshot in time from 2021 that will update yearly. The portal lists files for each of the years 2021 to 2025, each as CSV, shapefile, GeoJSON and a web service. The portal's category field reads Environment and Parks / Recreation, and its tags are Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, street trees and municipal forest.

Rows and fields

The 2025 web service on the City's ArcGIS server returned 151,726 rows on October 8, 2026. The same server returned 152,453 rows for the 2021 file, 151,164 for 2022, 151,607 for 2023 and 151,713 for 2024. The service description reads that it holds locations of trees that Philadelphia Parks and Recreation inventories within the limits of the city, and that the dataset is a snapshot in time. The service record shows a last edit date of November 20, 2025. Its metadata has been moved to the City-wide Metadata Catalog, which the record links.

Each row carries only six fields: an object ID, a tree name, a trunk diameter value (tree_dbh), a year, and x and y location values. The tree name field joins the botanical name and the common name in capitals. The year field reads 2025 on every row of the 2025 file, and the service query returned 50 rows with no diameter value. The portal's grouped query returned London planetree on 16,123 rows, red maple on 10,172, other cherry (Prunus species) on 7,458, Callery pear on 7,160, honeylocust on 4,993 and northern red oak on 4,822. These are row counts in the portal, not a statement about how many trees stand in the city.

Licence and terms

The dataset page's licence field reads City of Philadelphia License. The page also carries a terms of use notice that says browsing City data on the site constitutes acceptance of the licence and the City's terms, that the City reserves all rights in the database, and that the data is provided as is and without warranty. The service record itself carries no copyright text. This page does not restate the full terms: the dataset page is the place they are published.
