City tree data in Pittsburgh: the City of Pittsburgh Trees dataset

What the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center publishes about trees cared for by the City of Pittsburgh Forestry Division: 45,709 records on October 9, 2026, the condition ratings, the overhead utilities column and the note that the data has not updated since 2020.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The diversity targets that cities set for street trees are on the street tree diversity guide.

What the dataset is

The record is titled City of Pittsburgh Trees and is listed under the City of Pittsburgh on the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center portal, in the Environment group. Its description says it covers trees that the Forestry Division of the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works looks after, and that tree benefits are calculated with the National Tree Benefit Calculator Web Service. A bold note in the description says the data in the dataset has not updated since 2020.

Records, update and files

The portal's datastore returned 45,709 records on October 9, 2026. The record lists three files: the trees table as CSV, the same trees as GeoJSON, and a data dictionary as CSV. The trees CSV carries a last modified stamp of December 19, 2022, and the whole record's metadata was last modified on December 12, 2025. The record gives the publishing frequency as weekly and the data change frequency as "As Needed". Those two fields sit beside the description's own note that the data has not updated since 2020, and the page reports all three as the portal shows them.

Columns

The table has 59 fields, the first being the portal's own row number. Fifteen of them describe the tree and its site: an identifier, street number and street, common and scientific name, height, width, the length and width of the growth space, the growth space type, trunk diameter at base height, number of stems, overhead utilities, land use and condition. A long block of columns then holds the calculator's dollar values and pounds for stormwater, property value, energy, air quality and carbon dioxide benefits. The last columns give neighbourhood, council district, ward, census tract, public works division, a PLI division code, police zone, fire zone, latitude and longitude. The data dictionary file lists 58 rows, one per field with its type.

What the condition and utility columns hold

The condition column reads Good on 16,404 records, Fair on 16,233, N/A on 5,333, Poor on 4,615, Dead on 1,100, Critical on 988, Very Good on 554 and Excellent on 79, and is empty on 403. The overhead utilities column reads Yes on 14,862 records and No on 28,434. The common name column reads Stump on 1,079 records, so the total includes records listed as stumps.

Licence

The record's licence field reads Creative Commons Attribution and links the Open Definition page for that licence.
