This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The diversity targets that cities set for street trees are on the street tree diversity guide.
What the dataset is
The dataset is titled Trees and is published on the City of Sydney Data hub. Its description says it contains the location of trees in the City of Sydney, including tree type, species, common name, height, canopy, status, age and DBH. The layer is a point feature service. The portal record was created on February 25, 2021 and last modified on October 8, 2026, and the layer's data last-edit stamp is from the same week.
Records and columns
The layer's count query returned 15,000 records on October 9, 2026, and the highest object number is also 15,000. The layer has ten fields: object number, asset identifier, tree type, species name, common name, tree height, a canopy field, tree status, tree age and DBH in centimetres. The query found no empty value in the DBH, height or species name fields. The largest DBH value is 250 centimetres and the largest height value is 112.
What the columns hold
The tree type column reads Street Tree on 14,999 records and Park Tree on one. The status column reads Tree on all 15,000. The age column reads Mature on 11,873 records, Semi-Mature on 3,093, Young on 33 and Over-Mature on one. The common name column has 210 different values. The most common are London Plane with 2,361 records, Brush Box with 1,963, Broad Leaf Paperbark with 1,610, Water Gum with 1,007, Jacaranda with 580, Golden Robinia with 355, Chinese Tallow Tree with 340 and Hills Fig with 335.
The companion species list
The City publishes a second dataset, the City of Sydney Tree Species List. Its description says the list is of trees considered appropriate for planting within the local area, that it was developed with input from consultants, academics and practitioners in arboriculture, landscape architecture and urban forestry, and from an Indigenous consultant, and that it is meant to assist the selection and planting of trees on public and private land. The layer returned 297 records on October 9, 2026, with 24 fields that include family, genus, species, variety, origin, nominal height and spread, growth rate, dormancy, light, exposure, soil moisture, and vulnerability to maximum temperature events and to drought.
Licence
The Trees record carries a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence badge, with a link to the Creative Commons page for it, and an Open Data marker.
