City tree data in Vancouver, British Columbia: the Public trees dataset

What the City of Vancouver open data portal publishes about public trees on boulevards and in parks: the 184,377 records the portal counts on October 9, 2026, the weekday refresh, the common genera and the licence the record names.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. For Canadian city permit rules see the guide to tree permits in Canadian cities.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Public trees and is published by the City of Vancouver, with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation named as the data team. Its description says it lists public trees on boulevards and public trees in parks and gives coordinates, species and related characteristics. It says private trees are not included, and that tree records without coordinates do not show up in the list. It adds that a value of 0 in the latitude and longitude fields means no related information is available. The description says the coordinates were originally provided by the 2016 Geospatial Data for City of Vancouver Street Trees project, and it links the Street Tree Bylaw and the City's trees pages for further information. The portal files the record under the theme Streets and transportation.

Records, update and columns

The portal's record query returned a count of 184,377 on October 9, 2026. The description says the dataset refreshes daily on weekdays, and that tree attributes are updated on a regular basis but it may be several years between updates for some attributes. The portal's data-modified timestamp was October 5, 2026.

The columns are an asset identifier, the nearest address, common name, genus name, species name, cultivar name, height in metres, diameter in centimetres, the local area, and the point geometry. The local area column is described as the area where the feature is found, from the City's 22 local planning areas.

By row count the most common genera were maple (Acer) with 41,982, cherry and plum (Prunus) with 29,899, oak (Quercus) with 8,951, ash (Fraxinus) with 7,975, linden (Tilia) with 6,770 and hornbeam (Carpinus) with 6,714. The most common common names were Kwanzan flowering cherry with 9,770, Pissard plum with 7,136, Norway maple with 6,184, western red cedar with 5,792 and Crimean linden with 4,063. The local areas with the most rows were Hastings-Sunrise with 13,647, Renfrew-Collingwood with 13,072, Kensington-Cedar Cottage with 13,034 and Riley Park with 10,106.

Licence

The record's licence field reads Open Government Licence - Vancouver and points to a licence page on the portal. That page loads by script and returned no readable text to this check, so this page does not restate the licence terms. The conditions of use are the ones on that portal page.
