Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, field list, row counts and licence text as read on October 8, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. For a second city that shows its licence in the dataset record, see the San Francisco street tree inventory.

What the dataset is

The item is titled Urban Forestry Street Trees on Open Data DC, published by the City of Washington, DC. Its description says the District Department of Transportation's Urban Forestry Division is the primary steward of the city's public trees, puts that number at about 175,000 and points to the trees.dc.gov site. The data sits in a layer named UFA Street Trees in one of the city's tree map services. The item's tags include street tree, tree and DDOT.

Rows, status and update

The layer returned a count of 222,830 rows on October 8, 2026. The planting status field (TBOX_STAT), which also marks retired trees and planting sites, held Plant on 196,602 rows, Retired on 12,197, Proposed on 4,837, Conflict on 4,317, Open on 4,311, Delete on 269, Utility Conflict on 149 and Under Construct on 145, with 3 rows empty. A separate retired date field held a value on 5,452 rows. The latest value in the last edited date field was October 2, 2026. The layer record gives no update frequency.

The layer has 48 fields. They include scientific and common name, genus and family, planting date, facility ID, vicinity, ward, tree box length and width, wires, curb and sidewalk codes, trunk diameter (DBH), disease, pests, condition, condition date, ownership, tree notes, crown measurements from imagery, photo fields and a warranty period. By the condition field, 144,510 rows read Good, 29,011 Fair, 20,916 Excellent, 6,171 Poor and 5,717 Dead, and 16,505 were empty. By ownership, 193,423 rows read UFA, 11,847 DPR, 6,477 Private, 5,726 DCPS, 2,213 DGS, 1,961 NPS and 128 DCHA. By common name, red maple had the most rows with 11,796, then willow oak with 10,732 and pin oak with 7,761. These are row counts in the portal, not a statement about how many trees stand in the city.
