City tree data in Winnipeg: the tree inventory

What Winnipeg's open data portal publishes about public trees: the 305,405 records the portal counts on October 8, 2026, the weekly update, how the records split by location class, the Dutch elm disease tag field and the licence the record names.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 8, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence fields as read on October 8, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. For another prairie city's open file, see the Calgary public trees dataset.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Tree Inventory and sits in the Parks category of the City of Winnipeg's open data portal. The metadata names the Public Works department in the City Services group as the owner and gives the update frequency as weekly. The description is one sentence: a detailed list and map of all public trees located in the City of Winnipeg, including botanical name, common name and precise location. The portal's record query returned a count of 305,405 on October 8, 2026, and the record shows a last data update of October 5, 2026. The metadata gives a quality rank of Gold.

Columns

The columns are a tree ID, botanical name, common name, electoral ward, neighbourhood, diameter at breast height, park, location class, property type, street, the two streets that bound the block, X and Y coordinates, a Dutch elm disease tag number, a location and a point, plus matched neighbourhood, postal code and ward columns. The column note says diameter at breast height is measured in centimetres. The portal's own query counted 978 rows with a Dutch elm disease tag number filled in, and no rows with an empty diameter.

What the counts show

By the property type column, 303,203 rows read Public (UFB) and 2,202 read Public (COW). By the location class column, the largest values were Boulevard with 209,977 rows and Park with 89,506, followed by Golf Course with 5,075, Other with 372, Back Lane with 234, Natural with 141, Cemetery with 56 and Front Yard with 22. The most frequent common names were green ash with 81,917 rows, American elm with 39,612, linden species with 28,532, Siberian elm with 17,999 and bur oak with 16,203. These are row counts in the portal, not a statement about how many trees stand in the city.

Licence

The record's licence field reads Canada Open Government Licence and links the federal licence page. A separate custom metadata field on the same record reads Open Government Licence, Winnipeg. The federal licence text says the information may be used for any lawful purpose including commercial purposes, that the source must be acknowledged with the provider's attribution statement, and that it does not cover personal information or the provider's logos. This page reports the two labels as the record shows them and does not say how they relate.
