Climbing gear recall notice: Petzl ASTRO BOD FAST, ASTRO SIT FAST and CANYON GUIDE harnesses

What the CPSC, Health Canada, the UK product safety list and the maker say about the May 2026 recall of Petzl ASTRO and CANYON GUIDE harnesses, and the October 2023 inspection call that came before it.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page sets out what four records say about the Petzl ASTRO BOD FAST, ASTRO SIT FAST and CANYON GUIDE harnesses: the CPSC recall record and the Health Canada notice of May 14, 2026, the maker's archived inspection call of October 2023, and the UK product safety report of March 8, 2024. The wider list is in the guide to climbing gear recalls and safety notices. The notices linked below are the record, and each is restated here in our own words.

The fault as the notices describe it

The 2026 notices name a fault in the metal D-ring on the front of the harness: the pin that secures it can release, so the attachment point opens. The CPSC puts the result as a risk of serious injury or death from a fall. Health Canada calls it a fall hazard.

The earlier records describe the same part. The maker's October 25, 2023 inspection call says a defect was found on the gated opening attachment point of one ASTRO harness, caused by a poor machining process of the metal D, which lets the pin slide completely sideways even with both screws in place. It names the risk as death by strangulation or by falling from height. The UK report of March 8, 2024 words it as a risk of injuries from unintentional opening of the attachment point, and gives no risk level.

Which harnesses

The CPSC and Health Canada list the same model numbers. The serial number is on a plastic label inside the waist belt, and the range for every model is lower than 23J 9999999 999.

Product as the notice names itModel numbers
ASTRO BOD FAST, European versionC083AA00, C083AA01, C083AA02
ASTRO BOD FAST, International versionC083BA00, C083BA01, C083BA02, C083BA03, C083BA04, C083BA05
ASTRO SIT FASTC085AA00, C085AA01, C085AA02
CANYON GUIDEC086BA00, C086BA01

The harnesses are black with a yellow accent, except models C083BA03, C083BA04 and C083BA05, which are black. The CPSC says they were meant for operators and work-at-height professionals. The 2023 inspection call adds that a green sticker inside the plasticized label means the harness had already been inspected under that call.

Remedy and history

The 2026 CPSC record gives a free replacement D-ring kit, and Health Canada gives a free replacement kit with installation instructions. The CPSC lists the remedy type as repair. The 2023 inspection call asked owners to stop using the harnesses and run a pin test described on the maker's page. Its December 31, 2023 update says thousands of harnesses had been inspected by customers, that the maker inspected its own stock and production line, and that none showed the defect except the one that started the call.

The maker's page for the 2026 recall, which the Health Canada notice links, returned "not found" on October 9, 2026, so it is not linked here. The maker's archived page is the Petzl call for inspection of October 2023.
