Climbing gear recall notice: Petzl PIRANA descender
What the CPSC, Health Canada and the UK product safety list say about the 2022 recall of the Petzl PIRANA descender: the blocking slot fault, models, serial range, units, reports and refund route.
Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.
This page sets out what three official records say about one recall: the Petzl PIRANA descender, recalled in the United States and Canada on March 2, 2022 and in the United Kingdom with a recall date of February 11, 2022. The CPSC and Health Canada describe it as a descender for canyoneering, and it sits in the register because the notices cover a descender. The wider list is in the guide to climbing gear recalls and safety notices. The notices linked below are the record, and each is restated here in our own words. This page reports what the official source says. It is not legal advice: ask the office named here.
The fault as the notices describe it
All three records describe the same fault. When the user lets the rope run freely through the device to drop into water, the rope runs fast and can get caught or wedged in the blocking slot. The notices say the user can be left stuck in that position. The records name the result as a drowning risk, especially under a waterfall or in a pool. The UK notice adds that the product does not meet the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
Which descenders
The CPSC describes the PIRANA as an aluminum adjustable friction descender with three rope installation options, a friction spur for extra braking power and a plastic ring that keeps the connector in place. The recall covers two models:
- D005AA00, orange.
- D005AA01, black.
The serial number is on the frame of the device and falls between 19 F 0000000 000 and 22 A 9999999 999. The CPSC, Health Canada and the UK notice all give the same models and serial range.
