What the CPSC, Health Canada and the engine maker's recall page say about the 2021 recalls of log splitters with Briggs and Stratton 250cc engines: models, serial ranges, units, reports and remedy.

This page sets side by side what the official records say about two 2021 recalls of log splitters fitted with a Briggs and Stratton 250cc engine: the first notice of March 18, 2021 and the wider notice of May 12, 2021. It uses the two CPSC records, the Health Canada notice and the engine maker's own recall page. The wider list is in the guide to chipper, log splitter and pole saw recalls. The notices linked below are the record.
The fault as the notices describe it
All four records name the same fault: an incorrect engine ignition coil and flywheel, which can lead to hard starting and engine kickback, an injury hazard to the operator. The log splitters were sold under several brand names.
The March 18, 2021 notice
- Engine: Briggs and Stratton 250cc, model 15T232-0011-F8, with serial numbers from 1904085275251 through 1905085786452, from 1906146333235 through 2004080670911 and from 1912319442579 through 2012073736714.

- Units, as the CPSC states them: about 9,750 in the United States, with 290 more sold in Canada.
- Sold: April 2019 through February 2021 in the CPSC record.
- Reports: the CPSC says the company knew of two incidents with injuries.
Health Canada's notice of the same date, identification number RA-75159, is a joint recall with the CPSC and Briggs and Stratton, LLC. It covers only the 32 ton Black Diamond model BDBS32T and gives 290 units sold in Canada and 2000 in the United States, sold from April 2019 to January 2021. It says that as of March 17, 2021 there were no reports of incidents or injury in Canada and two reports of injury in the United States. It lists the place of origin as the United States, while the CPSC record names China as the country of manufacture. Both statements are shown because both are published.
The May 12, 2021 notice
- Engines: model 15T232-0011-F8 with serial numbers from 160331883074 through 2012073736714, and model 15T232-1850-F1 with serial numbers from 2004260782583 through 2012284118417.

- Units, as the CPSC states them: about 19,630 in the United States, with 362 more sold in Canada.
- Sold: March 2016 through February 2021 in the CPSC record, nationwide and, for Canada, online.
- Reports: the CPSC again says the company knew of two incidents with injuries.
- Product names: the notice is titled for YTL, Longli and Tiya log splitters.
How the notices say to identify the machine
The CPSC and Health Canada both say the engine model number is printed on the valve cover and the engine serial number on the blower housing cover. Health Canada adds that the first six digits of the serial number are the year, month and day the engine was built, and that the Black Diamond brand name is printed on the side rail, with the log splitter model number on a metal tag on the main beam above the axle.
Remedy
The CPSC, Health Canada and the maker give the same remedy: stop using the log splitter and contact an authorized Briggs and Stratton dealer for an engine repair. The CPSC and the maker word it as a free inspection and repair. The March CPSC record adds that the company contacts known buyers directly. The CPSC lists the remedy type as repair.
The maker's recall page
The engine maker's recall alert page carries the May 12, 2021 notice. It names both engine models, gives the serial ranges of the March notice for model 15T232-0011-F8, repeats the hazard, lists some of the brands and models, and gives the remedy as an engine repair. It does not list the Boss, Country Pro or Oregon models that the CPSC record of May 12, 2021 names. The page links to the official recall alert and a toll-free line for help.
