What the CPSC and Health Canada say about the April 25, 2024 recall of Oregon, PowerPro, Country Tuff and SpeeCo log splitters and replacement cylinder kits: models, units, reports, where sold and remedy.

This page sets side by side what the official records say about one recall: log splitters and cylinder kits sold under the Oregon, PowerPro, Country Tuff and SpeeCo brands, announced on April 25, 2024. It uses the CPSC notice page, the CPSC recall record from its web service and the Health Canada notice. The wider list is in the guide to chipper, log splitter and pole saw recalls. The notices linked below are the record.
The fault as the notices describe it
Both agencies name the same fault: the hydraulic cylinder rod can separate from the piston, which stops the splitting wedge from retracting. The CPSC says re-engaging the rod to the piston can cause the rod and wedge to move unexpectedly. Health Canada words it as the rod and wedge moving forward at an unexpected increased speed. Both name an injury hazard and both say consumers should not try to fix the product themselves.

The CPSC record also lists three cylinder kits, all under the ASY name: 622545 (5 inch cylinder kit with decals), 622522 (4.5 inch cylinder with decals) and 622906 (4 inch cylinder kit with decals). The CPSC says brand names are on the side of the log splitters and model numbers are on the machines.
Units, reports and where sold
- Units, as the CPSC states them: about 29,560 in the United States and about 4,690 sold in Canada.
- Reports: the CPSC says the firm received seven reports of the rod and wedge moving forward at an unexpected increased speed, with no injuries. Health Canada, as of April 18, 2024, gives two incident reports in Canada and five in the United States, with no reports of injury.
- Sold: the CPSC names Lowe's, Tractor Supply Company and other stores nationwide and online, from July 2020 through December 2023.
- Importer: Oregon Tool Inc., of Portland, Oregon. Country of manufacture: China.
Remedy
The CPSC and Health Canada give the same remedy: if the wedge fails to retract, stop using the product and contact Oregon Tool, or a dealer in the CPSC wording, for the installation of a free replacement cylinder. The CPSC lists the remedy type as repair. The CPSC gives a toll-free line, an email address and the maker's recall pages for more information. Health Canada notes that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada, and calls the recall a joint recall with the CPSC and Oregon Tool Inc.
