City tree data in Buffalo, New York: the Tree Inventory dataset

What Open Data Buffalo publishes about street trees: the 133,283 records the portal counts on October 9, 2026, the vacant sites inside that count, the two organisations named as responsible for maintenance and the public domain licence on the record.

Checked against the sources at the bottom of this page on October 9, 2026. Rules, fees and pay change: the source has the last word.

This page describes a public dataset as its portal publishes it. It reports the portal's own description, column list, record counts and licence field as read on October 9, 2026. It does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. The diversity targets that cities set for street trees are on the street tree diversity guide.

What the dataset is

The dataset is titled Tree Inventory and is published by the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets of the City of Buffalo in the Quality of Life category. Its description says it comprises all street trees within the City of Buffalo and that the Bureau of Forestry is responsible for maintaining and preserving the public urban forest. The record's custom fields name the Department of Public Works as the department and Forestry as the division, say the dataset is automated, and give the update frequency as daily.

Records and update

The portal's record query returned a count of 133,283 on October 9, 2026. The portal's rows-updated timestamp reads June 29, 2026, and the record was first created on the portal on February 13, 2018. The record carries 39 columns, of which the last eleven are computed region columns the portal added by itself.

Columns

The tree columns give the organisation responsible for maintenance, botanical and common name, trunk diameter at breast height, the house number and street, the side of the parcel, a site number used when several trees stand at one location, the council district, the park name, a site identifier, latitude and longitude. The diameter column is described as inches measured at 4.5 feet above ground. Its smallest value on October 9, 2026 was -10 and its largest was 508, and 72,144 records carry a diameter above 0. A group of columns holds the yearly dollar values for stormwater, carbon dioxide, energy, air quality and property benefits, with the gallons, pounds, kilowatt hours and therms behind them.

What the name and owner columns hold

The common name column reads VACANT on 61,112 records, so those records are listed as vacant rather than with a tree name. The next most common names were Norway maple with 8,576, littleleaf linden with 8,150, silver maple with 4,094, red maple with 2,398 and hedge maple with 2,261. STUMP reads on 2,286 records. The column for the organisation responsible for tree maintenance reads Buffalo on 117,602 records and Olmsted on 15,681. The park name column reads 0 on 117,600 records, which its description defines as trees not in parks; Delaware is the park named most, on 7,032 records. All 133,283 records carry coordinates.

Licence

The record's licence is Public Domain U.S. Government and links the USA.gov government works page. The record also carries a legal disclaimer from the City that says the data is not the City's official records and gives no warranty of accuracy or completeness.
