This page describes a public dataset as its publisher lists it. It reports the layer description, field list, record counts and licence text as read on October 10, 2026, and it does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. For another large city file, see the Winnipeg tree inventory.

What the dataset is

The record is titled Public Owned Trees on the Columbus open data site and is a feature service hosted by the city's Department of Technology. Its description says the layer maps public-owned trees in Columbus found in parks, public grounds and street right-of-way, and names the Recreation and Parks Department Urban Forestry program as the body that plants, inspects, prunes and removes them. The record carries the tags Ohio, City, Columbus, Recreation and Parks and Environmental, and shows a creation date of July 3, 2017 and a last modified date of September 2, 2020 for the record itself. The layer is a point layer, and the service returns up to 2,000 features per request. A count query returned 316,470 features on October 10, 2026.

Fields

The layer lists 34 fields. They include a tree ID, site class, a split address (house number, street prefix, name, type and suffix), ZIP, diameter at breast height, height, species code, cultivar, planting date, inspection date, a maintenance field and a next maintenance field, a retired date, a condition field, a planning area, a park, a work order number, a status field and editing audit fields. The layer definition attaches a value list to the species code field, which labels VSM, VSS and VSL as Vacant Site, Medium, Small and Large. It attaches no value list to the site class field, so the site class numbers are not explained there.

What the counts show

By the site class field, 281,194 rows hold the value 1, 30,846 hold 2, 2,119 hold 11, 1,246 hold 3, 537 hold 22, 368 hold 21 and 120 hold 4, with 25 rows empty. The status field is empty on 314,529 rows and holds the value 3 on 1,941. By the species code field, the most frequent values were VSM with 38,010 rows, VSS with 29,682, VSL with 18,506, ACRU with 14,986, PYCA with 12,244 and GLTR with 10,546. The retired field holds dates, and the count of rows with a retired date is not reported here. These are row counts in the layer, not a statement about how many living trees stand in the city.

Licence

The record's licence text reads that the data is dedicated to the public domain under the Creative Commons Universal License (CC0). The Creative Commons deed for CC0 1.0 says the person who associated a work with the deed has dedicated it to the public domain by waiving all rights to the work worldwide under copyright law, to the extent allowed by law, and that the work may be copied, modified, distributed and performed, even for commercial purposes, without asking permission.
