This page describes a public dataset as its publisher lists it. It reports the record description, field list and counts as read on October 10, 2026, and it does not interpret the numbers. The family overview is on the guide to city open tree data. For another large Canadian file, see the Winnipeg tree inventory.

What the dataset is

The record is titled Tree Inventory on Ottawa's open data portal and is a map service on the city's own server, with the layer named Tree Inventory and Inventaire des arbres. Its summary describes a map and listing of over 300,000 trees within the City of Ottawa, giving tree diameter, species, civic address, lot location and treatment. The record lists the update frequency as daily and the accuracy as unavailable, names the Forestry office as the contact, and shows a creation date of May 17, 2018 and a last modified date of March 27, 2026. It offers downloads as CSV, shapefile, GeoJSON and KML. The map server returns up to 1,000 features per request. A count query returned 304,321 points on October 10, 2026. The record tags it as a street tree inventory and a park tree inventory.

Fields

The layer lists 51 fields. They include a tree identifier, ward, street number and street name, ownership, species, diameter at breast height, planting date, a replant field, a utilities field, and a series of whole number flag fields named for park, facility, edge tree, path or trail, tree guard, grate, planter, staking and watering tubes. There are also trunk structure, status, treatment, treatment year, two tag number fields named EABTAGNUMBER and DEDTAGNUMBER, a program field, notes, created and modified dates, and coordinates.

What the counts show

By the ownership field, 294,483 rows read City and 9,838 read Joint. Every row reads Active in the status field. The most frequent species values were Maple Sugar with 25,643 rows, Maple Norway with 19,771, Maple Red with 18,871, Spruce White with 17,698 and Locust Honey with 16,849, out of 169 distinct species values. The most frequent ward values were 21 with 23,151 rows, 19 with 19,167 and 24 with 17,700. The utilities field reads N/A on 262,381 rows and Hydro on 17,560. In the program field, 13,190 rows read TNT, 7,562 Parks, 3,012 Streetscape and 952 Commemorative, with the rest empty or without a label. The treatment field has 1,272 rows reading EAB, 187 reading DED2, 172 reading LDD and 37 reading DED1; the layer does not spell those codes out, so this page does not either. These are row counts in the layer, not a statement about how many trees stand in the city.

Licence

The record's licence field points to the city's open data licence version 2.0. The licence page itself showed a bot check on October 10, 2026, so this page does not restate its terms.
